Stewart’s the Champ, at last!
Image: Frank Hopppen
It was a classic knock-down drag-out scrap of a supercross series across the pond but when it all came down to it at the final showdown in that home of all-you-can-eat lobster and gambling rackets – beautiful Las Vegas – it was James Stewart who triumphed over bitter rival Chad Reed to claim the 2009 AMA Supercross Championship.
After increasingly strained scenes between the two top protagonists in weeks leading up to the final, Stewart rode a conservative race to claim the title with a solid third place finish behind runaway winner Ryan Villopoto and Reed, who refused to pass a visibly slowing Stewart for a number of laps before trying to punt him off the track when he finally decided to sack up and go for it.
It wasn’t to be for the outgoing champ, though, and Stewart was happy to cruise home in third place and claim the crown, a deserved victory in our book seeing as he won the most races and was clearly the fastest rider all year.
Reed now faces his first outdoor season in a few years as he goes after the 450 outdoor title while Stewart is going to spilt his summer between counting his championship bonus money and riding selected events, like the X Games and hopefully a GP or two.
Karro
Crocked
After the high of his double win at the third round of the Maxxis British Motocross Championships at Brampton, MVR-D Suzuki’s Mattis Karro was dealt a blow to his British and world championship ambitions at the Spanish GP courtesy of a crash that left him with a broken hand, which will leave him twiddling his thumbs (or not) for the next few weeks.
After a tough first moto where he struggled to an uncharacteristic 18th place, Karro was fighting through from a poor start in heat two when an innocuous-looking crash left him clutching his thumb with something rather serious amiss.
After a hurried flight back to England, MVR-D team boss Mark Chamberlain confirmed that a small bone under the thumb was broken. The doctor predicted a six-week layoff, but Karro is trying his best to get the healing done as quickly as possible and hotfoot it back onto the track ASAP to keep his championship hopes alive.
Tonymoto
needs you!
Up until April the awesome Tonymoto Motocross Circuit, just outside of Winchester, had been open for five years under a temporary planning permission contract. Over that period the facilities and tracks have been improved and expanded to provide what many would now say is the foremost MX venue in the county, and probably the country, but, alas, its future is now in doubt.
In March of this year, following extensive consultations with local residents and the Local Planning Authority, a planning application was lodged to permanently increase the track’s availability for practice. The planning application is due to be determined by June 25, and until then the circuit will not be open for practice or races.
Whether Tonymoto will be granted permission to continue its good work and remain open is in the council’s hands, so for those of you that have ridden the track, or those that would simply like the opportunity to do so in the future, here’s your chance to help. All you need to do is write a short letter of support and email it to: nmackintosh@winchester.gov.uk
Full details of the planning application can be found on the planning portal of Winchester City Council’s website under planning application number: 09//0059/FUL, and letters of support can also be made here.
Come on guys and girls, get behind this MX facility before we lose it and give them your support.
Don’t Forget!Round four of the Maxxis British Motocross Championship takes place at the historic Hawkstone Park, Shropshire, on June 14. With the MX1 division developing into a real dogfight and all the country’s top talent on display in the famous soft sand it’s another event not to be missed.

Cock up alert. Last month we reviewed Alex Rankin’s excellent DVD about Josh Coppins’ 2008 GP season, One More Year, but someone (Ben) messed up when it came to providing you readers with details of where to get your hands on a copy of said film by putting the wrong website address in the mag. Oops.
The correct website for the film is: www.snakesandladders.cc, and you can visit there to get yourselves a copy of the movie for £21.99 right now.
Pourcel buggers shoulder again
Image: Sarah Gutierrez
After a stellar end to the 2008 season Sebastien Pourcel has had abysmal luck thus far in 2009 and, after his second shoulder injury in the space of just a few months at the Valkenswaard GP, the super-stylish Frenchman’s year is effectively ruined.
Currently the factory Kawasaki pilot is waiting to see whether he will be able to return to action without undergoing surgery and has had several meetings with French specialists to decide whether or not he will need to go under the knife to repair the injuries he suffered to the left shoulder he damaged in Holland, and the right shoulder he hurt over the winter; an arthroscopy revealed that the tendons are stretched.
“I had to wait several days to get a verdict, and now I need to visit specialists in France to decide whether or not I need surgery. I already know that an operation would mean eight weeks of recovery, and then a few weeks of training before coming back to racing,” explained the unfortunate Frog.
The Kawasaki Racing Team is awaiting more details about Sébastien’s recovery before it decides what action to take: “Seb will be back racing only when he is fully fit. We have a couple of options to replace him during several GPs, and we’ll announce more information as soon as we have it.”
Simpson breaks leg
Unless you’ve been hiding in a cave all month you’ll probably know this already, but our hopes of a British world champion took a whack when news came through that Shaun Simpson smashed his leg up pretty bad while practicing in Holland in May. For the full story turn to page 64.

The dust has not long settled after a classic 2008 Maxxis British Motocross season but nevertheless the ACU has confirmed dates for the 2009 series already, so break out those diaries and get them pencilled in race fans.
Again running across eight rounds the championship looks set to retain its position as the strongest domestic series in Europe, despite the loss of several big teams in the paddock.
Beginning at the traditional series opening venue of Canada Heights in March, the big news is that Desertmartin is off the calendar for the first time in years and in comes a Scottish round at the highly-rated Duns circuit in the borders region.
Also returning to the schedule is the super-fast Langrish circuit, and Landrake right down there in Cornwall, which will host the season finale on September 27.
The popular MYX2 class will return at four rounds, while the national Ladies series gets upgraded to three rounds and once again will have its final round at the series finale after two rounds as part of the MMX series.

AMA National Changes
Image: Frank Hoppen
It’s all change across the pond next season as the 2009 AMA Toyota Motocross Championship will see sweeping changes put in place to enliven the series and try push it into the American publics’ consciousness.
Now under the ownership of the massive Daytona Motorsports Group (DMG) and promoted by RacerX editor Davey Coombs’ MX Sports company, numerous changes will be brought forward to try and claw back some of the ground, riders and prestige lost to the all-conquering AMA Supercross series, with the most notable of which being the moving of all rounds to Saturdays over the traditional Sunday.
After the trial run of two events on Saturday this season the whole series gets shifted to this format for next year, doing away with the traditional two-day weekend that has stood since the series’ inception, while the schedule has been changed significantly to reduce travelling costs and travelling time, with four ‘off’ weekends built into the series to boot.
One-day Saturday racing will make for a very busy 24 hours for all involved but there are more big changes to the championship, the first of which is binning the widely unpopular class names ‘Motocross’ and ‘Motocross Lites’ in favour of the capacity orientated ‘450’ and ‘250’ classes, which at least make some sense to hardcore fans and are much more explainable to the casual spectator.
The most significant development, however, is the move to run the 450 class first on race days. The MX Sports announcement cites the 450 class’ status as the premier category for the move, but the more cynical among us would suggest it has much more to do with TV schedules.
Elsewhere on the cards is the requirement of the reigning champions to run the prestigious number one plate, while side plates will no longer be required to run numbers and will be opened up to teams to run sponsor logos and such like.
“Everyone at MX Sports has been working extremely hard in order to assure that the 2009 AMA Toyota Motocross Championship is positioned properly and has the deepest media reach it has ever had,” said Davey Coombs, Vice President of MX Sports. “We will continue our work on the tracks and the show, which remain what they are - the world’s premier motocross series.”
For a full and frank explanation of the changes, check out Davey’s ‘Guest Speaker’ column in this month’s MotoX.
